Why HSE University?

The Higher School of Economics (HSE University) is one of the largest and at the same time youngest universities in the country. Across four campuses in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm, over 40,000 students study, and more than 3,500 of those are foreigners.

HSE University has become the first university in Russia to adopt the Bologna system and currently utilizes the most advanced educational technologies: every student has the opportunity to not only choose major and minor courses, but also choose from a range of online courses on Coursera platform, the largest online learning platform. The University is actually one of the largest providers of courses for the platform - 91 HSE University courses are available via this learning service, including many courses delivered entirely in English.

Education at the University is divided into four modules rather than two semesters, which means there are four exam periods during the year. However, the study load is distributed evenly throughout the module, and the student’s grade for the subject draws upon all his/her coursework activities.

Currently, the University offers more than 250 Bachelor and Master's programmes: from Economics, Management and Sociology to Fundamental Mathematics, Media Communications, Computer Science and Design.

Student Life

One would have a hard time trying to describe student life at HSE University succinctly - it can be dynamic, varied, and each person has their own experience. The University has more than 100 organizations and clubs ensuring there's something for everyone. There are numerous sport clubs (from football to extreme sports and frisbee), science clubs and organizations, as well as clubs for music, film, and photography lovers. Students have a wide choice of options of how they wish to spend their free time and can even team up with like-minded people to create their own clubs, or launch a crowdfunding project among other students or university leaders.

Every year, the University hosts the Iron Egg student awards ceremony, where students and the jury choose the best projects of the past year.

Student Life at HSE Moscow

The University campuses are located in the largest cities in Russia: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in continental Europe. It is a city where any and all possible opportunities for study, business, science, and relaxation can be found. Moscow has one of the most developed - and beautiful too - transport systems in Europe and the world with more than 260 metro stations; there is absolutely no problem getting from one area of the city to another at any time. All metro lines (as in most public places) offer free Wi-Fi access. The average summer temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees. In the winter, the average temperature is -10.

Perm is one of the largest regional cities in Russia. It has a dynamically developing centre with a rich cultural life and a measured pace of life. The average summer temperature is between 22-25 degrees and the average winter temperature is -13.

Saint Petersburg is the cultural centre of Russia and the second largest city in the country. Russia's largest museums and art galleries (Hermitage, Russian Museum) are located here, as well as the most famous palaces of the country—Tsarskoye Selo and Peterhof. It is the closest Russian large city to Europe (in both distance and spirit) with the deepest metro in the world. The average summer temperature is between 20 and 22 degrees, and winter is warmer than in Moscow, with an average temperature of -7 degrees.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It is the largest transport hub and administrative centre in the Volga Federal District. There are more than 600 unique historical, architectural, and cultural monuments in the city, the main tourist attraction being, certainly, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The average temperature is similar to Moscow — around 20-25 degrees in the summer and -10 in the winter.
